NWFL Super 6: Delta Queens Set For Final With Bayelsa Queens

The 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super 6 are a thing of the past as the focus now turns to the final where Delta Queens will face Bayelsa Queens on Sunday, June 11 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

The first match of the day in Group A saw Bayelsa Queens piped 2021 winners Rivers Angels 1-0 at the same venue on Friday.

In the second tie, smarting from a 1-0 defeat to Confluence Queens, Edo Queens needed a win of two-goal margin to make the final or any win to qualify for the third-place but they could not muster it.

On the other hand, Delta Queens only required to avoid defeat and did that despite the incessant threats from the Benin City-based side.

Both sides had chances of taking the lead but couldn’t perfect the right finishing touches after 90 minutes.

Abideen Suliat in the 19th minute almost find the breakthrough but Delta’s defense were on the spot to avoid possible danger.

In the 36th minute, Moses Esther breezed past her marker but her finish left a lot to be desired as Delta goalkeeper, Mgbechi Anderline made an easy save.

Leading goalscorer, Mercy Omokwo also tried to break the deadlock in the 73rd minute but her shot from the edge of the box went wide.

Host, Delta Queens held on to seal their passage to the final of the where it will face defending champions on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the two teams that finished second from Group A and respectively will trade tackles in the third-place match.

Rivers Angels (Group A runners-up) and Confluence Queens (Group B runners-up) will face off in the third-place match by 10:00 am on Sunday before the final match by 4:00 pm.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Delta Queens coach Tosan Blankson: “I am very grateful. Planned for it that at worst we would get a draw if we can’t get a win because a draw will take us through to the finals. We have never been under pressure and won’t be under pressure. The finals will come and we would take it. I don’t know if Bayelsa Queens are the defending champions but the final day will reveal itself. I have lost any match this season and I would not lose any match. Both teams played very well. None of them convert their chances and it ended 0-0. It’s football. I won eight matches during the regular season. I defeated Bayelsa Queens in Yenagoa. I am expecting a tough final and we would triumph. The players have fueled my confidence.”

Edo Queens coach, Moses Aduku: “We thank God. It was a Grade-A game. It was a good game but we couldn’t convert our chances. We missed it when we lost to Confluence Queens after having all the scoring chances but couldn’t take them. It is one of those things. We would go back and work on them. My players were so determined to get the goals because we charged them up to ensure that we get the goals. We will start preparation early for next season and will get it right.”
