The Director General, National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, Brig-Gen Shu’aibu Ibrahim has cautioned employers on over using of Corp members at their place of primary assignment, urging them to treat them as permanent staff.
Ibrahim, represented by the Northwest Area Office Director of the scheme, Hajiya Zainab Isah, made the plea at a 2021 NYSC employers workshop held in Kaduna.
The DG lamented that the employers sometimes do not assign the Corp members the roles which were befitting as graduates.
“Some of the employers give the corp members too much work load and they hardly allow them go on break”.
Ibrahim however noted that the scheme would monitor and put to stop such kinds of attitudes by such employers.
“Employers should treat corp members as their own permanent staff, as they are also their responsibilities during the course of the national service. Their health and wellbeing is very key as that of permanent staff in any organisation, they must take care of them to complement the scheme in trying its best to ensuring their safety and health”
The DG frowned at the rate certain organization reject corp members, which sometimes results to them stage-managing their own rejection, delay in issuing monthly clearance, as well as their abscondment.
He however warned the corp members against unapproved travelling, and to also prioritise personal security.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the scheme, Alhaji Isah Wana said the achievement of the scheme’s objectives could only be sustained through collective efforts of all stakeholders, including the managers of the corp members.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Optimising the NYSC Corps Employers Partnership for National Development in the Context of the New Normal
He said the workshop was aimed at obtaining feedbacks from the strategic stakeholders on the strength, weaknesses and potentials of the scheme as well as chart ways of strengthening its operations.
