The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State has successfully carried out its first-quarter 2026 Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), delivering vital healthcare services and renewed hope to underserved residents in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.

The outreach, held at Pat Angelina Anyaegbu Memorial Hospital in collaboration with local health authorities, provided free medical services to about 120 indigent residents, including elderly people, women, youths and children — groups often most vulnerable to limited access to healthcare.

Declaring the programme open, the State Coordinator, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, expressed gratitude to the Amichi community for its cooperation, noting that the initiative reflects NYSC’s enduring commitment to community development and humanitarian service.

“This initiative is not just about medical care; it is about restoring dignity, promoting healthy living, and strengthening the bond between service and society,” she said, emphasising the importance of compassion-driven interventions in rural areas.

Representing the Chairman of Nnewi South Local Government Area, Hon. Uche Ochuba, the Chief of Staff, Hon. Emmanuel Anameme, commended the NYSC for bringing the outreach to the community. He described the programme as a significant step towards improving equitable access to healthcare and enhancing residents’ quality of life.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Chukwudalu Orji, also lauded the collaboration, describing it as a model partnership capable of transforming grassroots healthcare delivery. He noted that such joint efforts between public institutions and community stakeholders are essential to addressing healthcare gaps and building resilient communities.

The outreach featured a range of free services, including medical consultations, the distribution of essential medicines, and laboratory tests such as HIV and hepatitis screenings. Beyond treatment, the initiative also promoted preventive healthcare and encouraged residents to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Observers say programmes like HIRD demonstrate how strategic collaboration and youth-driven service can foster not only improved health outcomes but also unity, trust and shared responsibility within communities.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its healthcare system, initiatives like this serve as a reminder that sustainable development begins at the grassroots — with empathy, inclusion and a collective commitment to leaving no one behind.
