Ogun State Governorship Election: Supreme Court Upholds Dapo Abiodun’s Victory

The Supreme Court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital has affirmed the election of Governor Adedapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
A five-member panel of the court, led by Justice Tijjani Abubakar in an unanimous judgment dismissed the appeal by the governorship candidate  of the Peoples  Democratic Party, PDP, Oladipupo Adebutu, in the last election in Ogun State.
The appellants, Ladi Adebutu and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP prayed the apex court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct fresh elections in the 99 polling units where elections were allegedly cancelled.

 

The Appeal Court, Lagos Division, had in a split decision on November 24, 2023 affirmed the re-election of Dapo Abiodun as the duly elected governor of Ogun State.

The majority judgment delivered by Justice Joseph Ikyegh dismissed the appeal filed by PDP and its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Reading the lead judgement, justice Tijani Abubakar dismissed the appeal saying it was unmeritorious.
