The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ogun State Chapter, southwest Nigeria has joined their counterparts across the nation to protest against the prevailing economic hardship.
The National leadership of the NLC had declared a two-day protest for Tuesday and Wednesday to compel both the Federal and state governments to tackle economic challenges the citizens faced in recent times.
The industrial action has in attendance the leadership of the 40 affiliates of the union in the state to participate in the peaceful rally.
The protesters converged on the NLC Secretariat in Abeokuta, the state capital carrying placards with inscriptions such as, “Let the poor breathe, End hunger and poverty, reject IMF/World bank policies, Stop importation of petrol fix refineries now” among others.
Ogun NLC Chairman, Hammed Ademola-Benco said that the protest was hinged on getting good deals for Nigerians and never had the intention to confront the government.
Ademola-Benco noted that the current economic hardship in the country had affected the psychology of the people.
“The protest rally is about getting good deals for the people of the country. The truth is that people are suffering, many Nigerians are hungry, and the prices of food have reached the rooftop.
“The wage awards that they promised are still not being paid by many states.
“We are only calling on the government to be responsible and attend to our demands which is about making lives more rewarding and enjoyable for the people,” he said.
