Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has trained media practitioners from various media organisations in Abuja, as part of measures to enhance their
“impactful role in reporting the oil and gas industry and providing effective perspectives to the complex industry operations.”
The training was a collaborative effort between the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Federal Capital Territory Council and Chevron Nigeria.
While addressing the participants at a one-day capacity building programme, for journalists in Abuja, Chevron General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn, said that the company believes that the success of the larger society would impact the company positively.
She said that the company would continue to partner with the media for the development of the society.
Represented by the Head, Corporate Communications, Nigeria and Mid-Africa Mr Victor Anyaegbudike, Brikinn said that the company recognises the need for trainings for journalists so as to enhance their capacity.
“Chevron Nigeria Limited embarked on this partnership as we believe in the value derivable from developing human capital. I appreciate you for the quality of work you do in generating the contents that not only inform, but also educate and enlighten the society.
“I want to thank you for your impactful role in reporting the oil and gas industry and providing effective perspectives to the complex industry operations. We continue to partner with the media for the development of the society. In this light, we also recognise the need for capacity building of the media practitioners to enhance their capacity to perform their duties.
“We also recognise that the success of the larger society invariably translates to success in our business; and we believe it is in our long-term interest to add value to society as we create value for our stakeholders.
“CNL seeks to make human investments that deliver long-term transformative returns. This is achieved through our Nigerian Content development activities. In Nigeria, Chevron supports Nigerian Content development by providing employment to Nigerians, and contract opportunities in all our projects up to an estimated annual average over $1 billion,” Brikinn said.
Earlier, in his welcome address, chairman, NUJ, FCT Council, Osaretin Osadebamwen, expressed gratitude to Chevron for sponsoring the programme, stating that it would further boost the capacity of participants.
Osadebamwen explained that the programme “is in continued fulfilment of our desire to explore all opportunities for capacity training programmes to our members… It underscores our desire to continue to improve and sharpen our skills under the fresh start mandate designed to equip us further in our daily tasks – understanding the influence of the new media in our duty to society.”
