Ondo State Hosts First International Volunteer Day Summit

Ondo State South-west Nigeria, hosted its first Volunteer Summit on Friday to mark the 2025 International Volunteer Day, signalling a renewed push to strengthen civic participation and community service across the state.

The event held in Akure the state capital, brought together government officials, civil society organisations, humanitarian groups, and volunteers from multiple sectors. A major highlight was the launch of the Ondo State Volunteer Service, a new government-backed platform designed to coordinate and promote volunteer activities.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Volunteer Service, Adeolu Iwakun, described the summit as a milestone in the state’s efforts to institutionalise volunteerism. He commended Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for establishing the Volunteer Service Office to expand opportunities for citizen involvement in community development.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), South West region, Director Funke Salako urged Nigerians to embrace voluntary service as a catalyst for national progress.

Representing the governor, the Special Adviser on Environment, Tunji Rhema Moyero, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to citizen welfare, youth engagement, and inclusive governance.

Several individuals were honoured as Volunteer Ambassadors for their contributions to humanitarian work.

Officials said the summit, along with the new volunteer service platform, positions Ondo State as an emerging leader in organised volunteerism and community-driven development.
