A former Speaker of the 6th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Patricia Etteh, has called on the incoming 10th Assembly to perform better than the 9th Assembly.
She gave the advice during the valedictory session of the 9th House of Representatives.
According to her, the 9th Assembly really contributed their own quota to the progress of Nigeria.
“I have always hoped that a legislator would lead Nigeria.
“I have always been praying that God would give us someone that has passed through the legislative arm of government as a President of this nation.
“Who says God is not answering prayers? God answered my prayers and the prayers of others in giving us somebody who has really passed through this National Assembly, not only one.
“I asked for one, but God gave us three. He gave us three because he knows we have been yearning for it.
“We want somebody that really appreciates Nigerians. There is no one that would pass through the National Assembly or any legislative arm of government that would not appreciate Nigerians because we are the people that listen to the yearnings of this nation,” said Rt. Hon. Etteh.
She also prayed that in the nearest future, a woman would be elected as speaker.
She appealed to returning lawmakers to remember those ones that are leaving and not leave them behind:
“They have no other ministry than the National Assembly. Make sure you remember them when you come back; accommodate them and ensure they are well taken care of. That is the only way you would not be losing people fast.”
The one-time Speaker wished the lawmakers the very best.
