One World Media, a UK-based non-profit organisation that supports strong, vibrant, and independent media coverage of the Global South, has announced the appointment of Peter Horrocks OBE as its new Chair, marking a strategic move to strengthen its commitment to supporting independent journalism and storytelling worldwide.

Having served as Interim Chair for the 12 months, Horrocks brings a wealth of experience in media leadership and economic development. His appointment is set to reinforce the organisation’s mission of fostering collaborations between journalists, filmmakers, and media organisations globally.

Vivienne Francis, Director of One World Media, highlighted the significance of Horrocks’ leadership at a time when global journalism is facing unprecedented challenges.

“At this critical time for global journalism, it is vital that we prioritise those who are delivering impactful stories that reshape narratives and challenge misrepresentation. By connecting their stories to audiences and platforms, we can help build empathy and understanding. Peter’s experience in leading transformational strategies and deep knowledge of the industry are exactly what we need to take One World Media to the next stage, and I’m delighted to have his continued partnership and support,” she said.

Horrocks’ distinguished career includes key leadership roles at the BBC, where he served as Editor of Panorama and Newsnight before becoming Director of the BBC World Service. He currently chairs Learna Limited and serves on the Content Board of Ofcom.

In addition to Horrocks’ appointment, One World Media has announced two new trustees, Kadaria Ahmed and Catherine McCarthy, who will take on the roles of Co-Chairs in 2026. These leadership additions bring expertise spanning broadcasting, editorial direction, business strategy, and funding for independent journalism.

Kadaria Ahmed, a prominent Nigerian journalist and media entrepreneur, is known for her work in accountability journalism. She serves on the Nigerian Board of Trustees of the International Press Institute and has received grants from major institutions, including the Ford Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation.

Catherine McCarthy, with over 25 years of experience in public service broadcasting and digital health, has held senior roles at the BBC and currently leads a non-profit organisation focused on digital health initiatives for underserved communities worldwide.

Horrocks expressed enthusiasm for his new role, underscoring the importance of supporting journalists in an evolving media landscape.

“I’m delighted to be taking on this role. Storytellers and journalists around the world face unprecedented challenges, but with the experience, networks, and deep passion of organisations like One World Media, we can together respond to this moment. I look forward to working with Vivienne and our new trustees to ensure that we deliver,” he said.

With these leadership appointments, One World Media aims to strengthen its global impact, ensuring that vital stories continue to reach audiences and contribute to a more informed and connected world.
