OpenAI Integration: Musk Vows to Ban Apple Devices

Elon Musk stated on Monday that he would ban the use of Apple devices at his companies if the iPhone manufacturer integrates OpenAI into its operating system.

Musk, who serves as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owns the social media company X, called this integration “an unacceptable security violation” in a post on X.

He added that visitors would need to check their Apple devices at the door, where they would be stored in a Faraday cage.

Earlier that day, Apple announced various AI features for its apps and operating platforms, along with a partnership with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT technology into its devices.

Apple emphasized that its AI was built with privacy at its core, utilizing both on-device processing and cloud computing.

Musk criticized Apple’s decision, saying, “It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy.”

Ben Bajarin, CEO of consulting firm Creative Strategies, noted that it was unlikely anyone would follow Musk’s lead. He explained that Apple is trying to educate the public on the security of private cloud data, emphasizing that when data is transferred to the secure private cloud, it maintains the same level of user data anonymization and firewalling.

Earlier in March, Musk sued OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015, and its CEO Sam Altman, claiming they had deviated from the startup’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity rather than for profit.

Musk has also established his own startup, xAI, aiming to compete with OpenAI and develop an alternative to the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
