OpenAI launches custom GPT store

OpenAI has announced the launch of its GPT Store, a cutting-edge marketplace dedicated to personalized artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Located within the widely used ChatGPT chatbot, the GPT Store serves as a hub where users can explore and construct GPTs—tailored artificial intelligence designed for specific tasks such as math instruction or sticker design.

OpenAI seeks to capitalize on the consumer triumph of ChatGPT, which captivated users last year with its prowess in generating humanlike prose and poetry. While ChatGPT rapidly ascended to become one of the fastest-growing apps, growth tapered off during school breaks, and the initial novelty of the chatbot diminished.

The GPT Store will initially be rolled out to users who are on paid ChatGPT plans, OpenAI said. In the next several months, the company intends to add a way for GPT creators to monetize their personalized AIs.

The Microsoft-backed startup announced the GPT Store in November at its first developer conference. It was originally set to go live later that month.

However, in December, OpenAI postponed the GPT Store launch, noting in an internal memo its commitment to “making improvements” to GPTs based on customer feedback. This delay unfolded amid the unexpected removal of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman by the company’s board, only to see his reinstatement following employee threats to resign.

Furthermore, OpenAI announced on Wednesday the introduction of ChatGPT Team, a paid version tailored for companies, enabling their staff to utilize ChatGPT in professional settings.

Designed to uphold data privacy, ChatGPT Team isolates a company’s information, ensuring that any input into the chatbot remains confidential. The subscription for ChatGPT Team ranges from $25 to $30 per user per month.
