The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Nigeria led by Director-General Mallam Lanre Onilu, has begun a nationwide flood sensitization and evaluation programme in all flood-prone states, local governments, and communities across the country.

In a briefing with journalists in Ohita Community, Ogbaru Local Government of Anambra state, Mallam Onilu and his team shared their findings after assessing the rate of flooding in various local government areas in Anambra state.

They informed the people of Anambra that the Cameroonian authority had released the Lagdo Dam water on the 18th of September 2024.

Represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Strategy, Nuru Kobi, Mallam Onilu explained that the release of water from the Lagdo Dam is expected to increase the water levels of the river Niger and Benue, leading to potential flooding in the country.

The sensitization program aims to inform and prepare the people living in riverine communities for potential flooding.

He emphasized the need for preparedness, as previous floods in 2012 and 2022 resulted in significant losses of lives and properties.

Mallam Onilu therefore urged residents to move to higher grounds and secure their belongings in case of flooding, as the Cameroonian authority is releasing about 5 million cubic meters of water daily, which will increase water levels in the country.

The NOA’s state Director in Anambra, Mr. Edozie Ajaegbu, highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to educate and mobilize people in flood-prone areas in the state.

He noted the regular occurrence of flooding in the country and the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents.

President-General of Ohita Community, Chief Emma Obi, shared his community’s experience with flooding, stating that this year’s floods have already impacted several communities in the area.

He praised the government agencies for their early warnings and assistance in evacuating residents and valuables to safe locations.

Chief Obi called for permanent solutions to mitigate the effects of flooding, suggesting the construction of embankments along the River Niger to prevent future disasters.

He stressed the importance of proactive measures to protect communities from the devastating impacts of flooding.

Meanwhile, the NOA Director-General reiterated the agency’s commitment to raising awareness and ensuring the safety of residents in flood-prone areas.

He therefore urged residents to take necessary precautions and heed evacuation warnings to minimize the impact of flooding in the area.
