Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, said comparisons with the late Rashidi Yekini does not distract him, stressing that his focus is on helping Nigeria win, rather than chasing individual records.

Speaking after Super Eagles’ 3–1 victory over Uganda on Tuesday, Osimhen dismissed claims that he is preoccupied with surpassing Yekini’s all-time national scoring record of 37 goals.

He explained that his priority is contributing to the team through goals, assists and overall work rate, not personal milestones. While he believes the record could come in time, Osimhen said it would never be at the expense of team objectives.

The 27-year-old currently has 32 goals for Nigeria, five short of Yekini’s long-standing record and has scored once in three games so far.

Despite failing to find the net against Uganda, he led by example as goals from Paul Onuachu and a brace by Raphael Onyedika secured the win.

Nigeria finished top of Group C with a perfect nine points from three matches, advancing confidently to the Round of 16.

Osimhen emphasised that leadership, teamwork and winning trophies matter more to him than personal glory, adding that his full attention is on guiding Nigeria toward a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.
