Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the July 16 Governorship Election in Osun state and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Lasun Yussuff, has asked politicians in the country to run issue-based campaigns and stop chasing shadows.

Yussuff gave the charge on Friday, while addressing a press conference at his Campaign Office in Oroki Estate, Osogbo.

He said the era when politicians avoided issues but relied on political thugs and other unwholesome acts to trick the people and cower other contestants to submission was gone.

He also said the electorates were the most important part of any election, hence political campaigns should focus on issues affecting them.

The Labour Party governorship candidate, who noted that democracy in Nigeria had grown beyond twenty years, said Nigerian politicians should also grow and get better with age.

He added that it was high time his counterparts in the other parties realised that only correct analysis of issues and a workable action plan could make politicians win over the electorate and not violence and lies.

The former lawmaker said these against the backdrop of an alleged destruction of his campaign materials and some parts of his campaign office during the week.

He said: “I am peace loving and expect all contestants to be. Thuggery and hooliganism or employing violence to win election will not work this time around! Even using money will not!

“My campaign is based on issues and programs premised on changing the narratives for Osun and its people.”

Yussuff urged all politicians in the country to follow the line of peace and allow the electorate make their choices as that was the only way the nation’s democratic values would grow.
