More than 1000 former members of the Labour Party (LP) have defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The decampees were warmly welcomed by Governor Charles Soludo at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Center in Awka, the state capital.

They were led by Chief Rochas Orji, the national coordinator, along with various state and local government coordinators.

Governor Soludo labeled APGA as the foremost progressive party in Nigeria and reiterated his dedication to fostering an environment conducive to swift state transformation.

His remarks underscore the party’s commitment to delivering good governance and the dividends of democracy to the people of Anambra.

The State Chairman of APGA, Ifeatu Obiokoye attributed the mass defection to the notable progress Governor Soludo has made in a short time.

He said it reflects the inadequacies and struggles of the LP, which has seen a significant decline in its presence and influence within the state.

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Dr Alex Obiogbolu revealed that discussions with the departing group had been ongoing for six months prior to their official defection.

“This mass resignation highlights the deepening crisis within the LP, which has been plagued by internal disputes at both national and state levels. Allegations surrounding the mismanagement of campaign funds, favoritism in candidate nominations, and the lack of a cohesive leadership structure have exacerbated the party’s struggles. The departure of the Oga Ndi Oga warriors, originally grassroots supporters of the LP stresses the sentiment that Anambra has become effectively a stronghold for APGA, with many considering it devoid of credible opposition.

“This significant defection raises concerns about the viability of the Labour Party as a competitive political force in Anambra. The implications of this mass movement are profound, potentially marking a defining moment in the state’s political history as APGA consolidates its influence and the LP grapples with its uncertain future,”  Obiogbolu stated.
