The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has, on Thursday, announced the dissolution of all 36 standing committees in the Assembly.

The announcement, which came as a surprise, was made shortly before the adjournment of Thursday plenary at the Hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly.

Ogundoyin, who said the dissolution is with immediate effect, explained that the standing committees are central to activities of the House of Assembly, hence the need to re-strategise, re-evaluate their positions to be more effective in their roles as legislators.

He stated: “This is the second year in office. We expect to re-evaluate our positions, we are expected to be more effective and efficient in our roles as legislators in terms of oversight, lawmaking and other functions of the legislature. What happened is normal in the parliament and it will help to sharpen members and the process and procedures of the legislators.”

The Speaker asserted that the about ten bills presently before the various House committees would be taken up by new committees who would finish them up as fast as possible before the long recess of the House. He noted that once the bills are completed, the Assembly would have passed over 73 bills which will surpass the records set by the previous assembly by over 20.

Ogundoyin said: “The previous assembly could only complete 53 bills in a span of four years and we would have managed to complete that number by the time we are done before the long recess, by that time we would have completed 73 bills in the span of two years. So, you can see the disparity in the effectiveness and efficiency of this Assembly.”

He revealed that the plan is to take the efficiency and effectiveness of the Assembly to the next level by setting the precedence of a high standard such that any assembly following would know what standard and level is expected of them.

Ogundoyin expressed appreciation to the members that served in the committees, saying without them, the achievements, all the bills, the oversight functions and the motions that have been passed by the Assembly would not have been possible. He subsequently directed them to hand over all ongoing and concluded bills and reports to their respective committee clerks.
