The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on political leaders to demonstrate empathy and take concrete steps to reduce the hardships facing Nigerians as Christians across the country commemorate Palm Sunday.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said Palm Sunday carries a message of peace, humility, and hope, urging leaders to reflect these virtues in governance, particularly at a time of economic difficulty.
CAN noted that many Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of living, as increases in fuel prices, transportation fares, and food costs continue to put pressure on household incomes.
The association observed that the current situation has left many citizens uncertain about how to cope and plan for the future, stressing that leadership in such times should inspire confidence through thoughtful communication and decisive actions.
“True leadership is not always loud. It is seen in restraint, in empathy, and in a steady focus on the common good,” the statement said, urging authorities to prioritize policies that will ease hardship, calm public anxiety, and promote national unity.
CAN also encouraged Nigerians, especially young people and those most affected by the economic challenges, not to lose hope, noting that the country’s current difficulties can be overcome with collective effort.
The association prayed for national unity and progress, urging citizens to work together in navigating the country’s present challenges.
“As we journey through this sacred season, may the spirit of Palm Sunday guide us towards quiet courage, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to the good of all,” he added.
