The Parliamentary System of Government Support Caucus in the House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow over the death of business icon, philanthropist, and elder statesman, Aminu Dantata, describing him as a “living archive of Nigeria’s evolution.”
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Caucus said Dantata’s contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development would endure for generations, noting that his passing “marks the end of an era.”
Signed by the Chairman of the Caucus, Mr Kingsley Chinda, and Spokesperson, Mr Abdussamad Dasuki, the statement highlighted Dantata’s role as “a witness to our colonial past, a participant in the struggle for independence, and a custodian of the ideals that shaped the First Republic.”
“His life embodied the values of hard work, integrity, and quiet but decisive influence in national affairs,” the group stated.
Recalling a recent visit to Dantata in February 2025, the lawmakers said he had warmly received their delegation seeking his counsel and support for the movement to return Nigeria to a parliamentary system of government.
“He listened attentively, offered historical insights grounded in experience, and most importantly, endorsed our efforts both morally and materially,” the statement noted.
The group added that Dantata’s support reflected his conviction that Nigeria must retrace its steps to a more accountable, cost-effective, and inclusive system of governance, reminiscent of the First Republic, which he had experienced first-hand.
“His endorsement gave our mission greater legitimacy and reminded us that the struggle to reform Nigeria’s governance structure is not a generational fad but a historical responsibility,” the lawmakers said.
They further affirmed their continued commitment to pursuing constitutional reforms that will facilitate Nigeria’s transition back to a parliamentary system of government.
“This vision reflects the aspirations of many well-meaning Nigerians and reaffirms our belief in a governance structure that promotes greater stability, accountability, and representation,” the statement read.
The Caucus extended its condolences to the Dantata family, the Kano Emirate, and the entire nation, describing his passing as the loss of a “rare patriot.”
“May we, in his memory, find the wisdom to stay true to our principles and the courage to pursue the Nigeria he believed was still possible,” the group added, praying that Almighty Allah grants his soul eternal rest and admits him into Aljannah Firdaus.
