Payment of Lecturers’ Outstanding Salaries: VC lauds Sokoto Governor

The Acting Vice Chancellor of Sokoto State University (SSU), Professor Muhammad Bello Yarima, has applauded Governor Ahmad Aliyu, for approving all outstanding payments for lecturers.

Professor Bello Yerima disclosed this in an interview with Journalists in his office in Sokoto State.

According to him, a week before commencement of Academic Staff Union of the university strike the payment was approved.

He said payments have already commenced to the deserving persons and underscored the importance of more understanding and tolerance from the unions’ sides.

Prof Yerima highlighted that a committee constituted by the visitor, Governor Aliyu had investigated the issues and forwarded the agreements on the commulated demands to government before the strike commenced.

”Surprisingly it was on the day the committee submitted findings, the lecturers embarked on the strike, the accumulated payments ranging from four years and below were encured before Gov. Aliyu took over, ” Prof. Yerima explained.

He explained that all avenues of contacts, appeals and solicitations were exploited by the council’s governing board and the union bodies where all aware before the industry action.

” We are happy that strike had been call-off within seven days, normal academic activities have resumed, although administrative duties were not altered, little alignment was ensured in the students time-table.

” We must commend the visitor for approving outright payment of all outstanding payments, because the backlogs were encured before he took over the leadership.

 ” Visitor is so magnanimous to accommodate all the demands, and urged the workers to reciprocate the efforts by more dedication and high performances, ” he added.

According to him, a constructed of female hostel have been completed to argument the existing students accomodations while rehabilitations of lecture halls, theatre, staff quarters and other structures in the institution.

He added that state government have provided additional private security outfit to argument existing school securities to ensure more secured environments as measures to contain challenges.

The Acting VC further disclosed that all the 22 undergraduate courses and post graduate courses in the university are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He noted that a delegation was in the university and look into the courses and allied requirements while resources verification was conducted for postgradutes programmes.

”We parented additional six postgradutes courses for resources verifications waiting for approval, they comprised Phd in Economics, Msc Economics, PhD Environmental Sciences and Waste Management, PhD Microiological Science, Msc Biological Science and Applied Biology, ” he said.

He said the present administration is striving to restore the institution on its glory and blamed the previous administration for neglect adding that when Governor Aliyu took over he immediately restored the university’s monthly allocations.

It was recalled that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) SSU branch in February embarked on strike action for non implementation of 25 per cent and 35 per sent salary increment and its consequential adjustment.

The union was also demanded the payment of arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increment from Jan. 2024 to date.

Others comprised payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for seven academic sessions, outstanding payment of promotion arrears for three academic sessions.

They were also demanded payment of an annual increment for five academic sessions, outstanding remittances of the union’s check-off dues and cooperative deductions and outstanding payments of visiting and sabbatical lecturers mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
