The Chief Executive and Program Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), Michael Oluwagbemi, on Thursday, visited the site of the tragic accident at Karu Bridge in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
He was accompanied by officials from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), who are conducting independent investigations into the incident.
During the inspection, Oluwagbemi expressed condolences to the victims and their families. He emphasized the need for increased safety awareness and strict adherence to safety protocols at accident scenes.
He also called for improved monitoring of articulated trucks, particularly regarding brake safety and maintenance compliance. Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of a robust licensing system for commercial drivers, ensuring they receive adequate safety and evacuation training.
Following its preliminary findings yesterday, PCNGI reaffirmed its stance on the safety of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.
The organization urged patience as authorities work to determine the cause of the accident and reiterated its commitment to a well-regulated gas vehicle ecosystem. PCNGI also highlighted the upcoming launch of the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS), aimed at enhancing oversight in the sector.
Reaffirming its commitment to road safety, PCNGI continues to advocate for alternative energy sources that are cheaper, safer, and more reliable, aligning with Nigeria’s broader economic development goals.
