The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has firmly rejected any move to join a coalition or merge with other political parties, distancing itself from initiatives reportedly backed by its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other cross-party politicians.
In a communique issued at the end of its meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and read by the Forum’s Chairman, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, the governors resolved that,
“The PDP will not be part of any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, we welcome any individuals, parties, or groups willing to join us in the pursuit of rescuing Nigeria and providing credible leadership come 2027.”
National Secretary Vacancy
The Forum reaffirmed its position, previously taken in Asaba, on the vacant National Secretary position. In light of a recent Supreme Court judgment, the governors recommended that the Deputy National Secretary act in that capacity pending the nomination and ratification of a substantive Secretary from the South East zone by the National Executive Committee (NEC) at its next meeting.
State of Emergency Concerns
Governor Mohammed stressed the Forum’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. As such, the Forum will seek a definitive interpretation from the Supreme Court on the legal provisions guiding the declaration of a state of emergency.
The governors also expressed solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, condemning the political instability in the state. They pledged to stand by him throughout the ongoing crisis.
Insecurity and National Safety
The Forum voiced concern over the deteriorating security situation in several parts of the country, including Borno, Plateau, Katsina, and Edo States.
It called for a reassessment of national security strategies and urged the adoption of a bottom-up approach that allows state governments to play a more active role in preventing security breaches.
They also condemned the recent deadly attacks in Plateau State and expressed sympathy with the victims and the government.
Upcoming NEC Meeting and National Convention
The Forum announced plans to:
- Convene a NEC meeting on May 27, 2025.
- Organise an early National Convention on August 28–30, 2025 in Kano.

Wike’s APC Ties
Notably, the Forum remained silent on mounting calls from within the party to sanction the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his widely reported ties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
