The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has declared that the party’s 2025 Elective National Convention, scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, is sacrosanct and will serve as a turning point in strengthening the party as Nigeria’s foremost opposition party.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 2025 National Convention Organising Committee in Abuja, Damagum described the event as “a critical step towards consolidating the PDP’s structures and reaffirming its place as the hope of millions of Nigerians.”

The Organising Committee is chaired by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, with Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State as Vice Chairman and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State as Secretary. Damagum expressed confidence in their competence, noting that the leadership reflects the party’s unity and diversity.

He reminded members of the importance of the Convention, stressing that the officers to be elected would lead the party into the 2027 general elections. He also cautioned against distractions, emphasising that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains unbroken and determined to reclaim power at the national level.

“The PDP is not defeated; the PDP is marching forward, stronger, more determined, and better prepared to reclaim the presidency of this great country,” Damagum declared.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Senator Ahmed Makarfi urged the party to sustain its tradition of building consensus, stressing that conventions should unite rather than exclude.

In his remarks, Governor Fintiri pledged to deliver “the most credible, fair, and transparent convention in the history of the PDP,” while assuring stakeholders that the committee would work tirelessly, build consensus, and reconcile differences ahead of the Ibadan gathering.

He further appealed to members of the 120-member committee to make sacrifices, attend meetings diligently, and work through sub-committees to ensure the success of the convention.

The Ibadan Convention is expected to produce a new set of National Working Committee members who will pilot the affairs of the party into the 2027 general elections.
