The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Assembly Caucus has passed vote of confidence on the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the party.

The Caucus also pledged its unflinching support for the Committee, promising to do everything within its jurisdiction to help the new team succeed. The lawmakers expressed confidence in the ability of the Committee to lead the party out of crisis.

Senators and House of Representatives members on the platform of the PDP, who make up the caucus, met with the Committee, when Makarfi led his team on a courtesy visit to the National Assembly, as part of its consultations to reconcile aggrieved members of the party.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in his welcome address, tasked the Caretaker Chairman to carry everybody and segment of the party along, urging the Committee to be democratic in its dealings.

He noted that the foundation that would be laid by the Committee, would determine the success and survival of the party in future, assuring the party of the full support of the Caucus.

“We have our ups and downs and challenges; we will like to appeal to you that every segment of our party be carried along. We must be seen to be democratic in our dealings. Nigerians expect us to be democratic. We assure you of our support in the task ahead. The foundation you will lay will determine the success of the party in future,” Senator Ekweremmadu assured.

Also speaking, the Senate Minority Leader and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, said the PDP National Assembly Caucus had endorsed the decision of the party’s Convention in Port Harcourt, which produced the Caretaker Committee.

According to him, the decision in Port Harcourt was unanimous, and that the Caucus identified with the actions of the Committee so far, stating that the National Assembly members were elated at the emergence of Makarfi and his team.

“We want to say that we are proud of you and how you brought peace to the party. In the Senate, we support you and your team. Please exercise all the powers given to you in Port Harcourt. You have authority to take us into the next convention. There is no division in PDP. For you to take this step, and coming to consult with the real elected people, we salute this move”.

Similarly, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Leo Ogor, charged the Makarfi-led Committee to do everything within its power to tackle the problems in the country by ensuring that the party takes over power in 2019. He asked Senator Makarafi to put necessary structures in place to move the party forward.

In his response, Senator Makarafi assured the Caucus that the Committee would represent the interest of the PDP and all Nigerians, saying that his mandate was to heal all wounds and ensure no more fighting in the party. The New PDP caretaker committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi was Governor of Kaduna state between 1999 and 2007 before being elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the previous National Assembly.
