Senator Muhammad Hassan Gusau representing Zamfara Central Senatorial District of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, has defected to the All Progressives Congress Party.
This latest defection is coming within one week of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi’s defection from PDP which earned him a Presidential commendation. Senator Nwaoboshi is representing Delta North Senatorial District.
It would be recalled that the number of PDP Senators had last year reduced from 44 to 43 when Senator Ishaku Elisha defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Senator Hassan Gusau set the ball rolling at the resumption of the week’s plenary by resigning from the party in a letter read by the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan.
Senator Gusau in the letter, hinged his resignation from PDP on alleged collapse of internal democracy and factionalisation of the party in Zamfara State.
Unofficial information from the office of the President of the Senate has it that, three other senators are waiting to announce their defection from the PDP, and they are Senators Lawal Hassan Anka (Zamfara West), Senator Sahabi Ya’u (Zamfara North) and Senator Stephen Odey (Cross River North).
The source however has it that while three out of the remaining four are set to formally announce their defection on the floor of the Senate, Senator Ya’u may not leave the PDP now.
According to the source, being a principal officer as Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Ya’u may not want to lose the position for now.
Voice of Nigeria gathered that when the defections are officially made and carried out in the Senate, PDP which started with 44 Senators at the beginning of the 9th Senate in June 2019, will have 37 Senators while APC which started with 66 Senators will increase to 71.
The remaining one seat is occupied by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who represents Abambra South Senatorial district on the platform of the Young Progressives Party, YPP.
