Zamfara State Governor, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has reaffirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and undeterred by recent defections and internal challenges, expressing confidence in the party’s readiness to hold a credible and unifying national convention in November.
At the official inauguration of the Accreditation Committee for the 2025 PDP National Convention in Abuja, Governor Lawal described the exercise as a vital step toward ensuring transparency and orderliness in the forthcoming convention, scheduled to take place in Ibadan, Oyo State.
He commended the members of the accreditation committee for accepting to serve, emphasising that their task goes beyond administrative duty.
“You are the gatekeepers of our convention’s integrity. This assignment demands diligence, fairness, and a deep sense of responsibility,” he stated.
Governor Lawal urged party members to demonstrate unity and selflessness as the PDP works to strengthen its internal cohesion ahead of the convention.
“Our great party is a family. Disagreements are inevitable, but the collective interest of this family must supersede personal ambitions,” he added.
Addressing journalists after the inauguration, Governor Lawal dismissed concerns over divisions in the North-West following reports that some stakeholders opposed the adoption of former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as the consensus candidate for national chairman.
He explained that such disagreements were part of the democratic process and not a sign of crisis.
“In politics, it’s about give and take. Agitations are normal, but we are working to carry everyone along to ensure a successful and inclusive convention,” he assured.
On logistics and welfare arrangements for delegates, the governor disclosed that comprehensive plans have been made to ensure smooth transportation and accommodation for all participants.
“Arrangements are in place to move delegates from their regions to Ibadan, and everyone will be properly taken care of. This committee is the engine room of a successful convention,” he said.
Reacting to questions on recent defections from the party, Dr. Lawal maintained that such movements were part of political evolution.
“The only thing that is constant is change. In 2015, PDP had about 30 governors—what happened later? Politics is dynamic, and our focus is on rebuilding and strengthening our great party,” he concluded.
