The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has organised a sensitisation lecture in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, to commemorate International Women’s Day by highlighting women’s invaluable contributions to the society.

The lecture with the theme “Supporting Women and Girls into Political Leadership” is aimed at building confidence and inspiring hope for greater participation of women in the political development of Nigeria and the world.

The PDP National Women Leader, Mrs Amina Devine, started that women’s equal participation and leadership in politics are keys to the achievement of the sustainable development goals by 2030.

According to the United Nations, as at January 10th 2024 there are 26 countries where women serve as Heads of state or government, with only 15 countries out of 195  in the world having a woman  as Head of state and 16 having women as Head of government which you will all agree is quite poor.”

“Sadly, despite being powerful agents of change with proven benefits, they have continued to be under-represented in politics and other sectors.”

Mrs Devine said “Women must first get the inspiration to lead and aspire for leadership roles and positions and must be equipped, prepared and trained, and capable of handling such roles.”

Opportunities for growth

He said women who have found their way into leadership positions must ensure they provide access to opportunities for growth and development for other women in Nigeria and the world

Similarly, the PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu said women have remained the pillars of every society based on the importance and their contributions to the development of society.

“I wish one day woman will be the President of this country because of their hard work in ensuring that every child in the society becomes better.”

While delivering her speech the former Minister of Women Affairs Mrs Maryam Ciroma said  the contribution of Women to the development of democracy in Nigeria cannot be overemphasised and  despite all the efforts of women, they  are being deprived of many opportunities especially in  political positions.

He implored women to remain hardworking, strong, focused, and determined to inspire inclusion.
