The Network of Peace Journalists in Northern Nigeria has mobilised over 100,000 Citizens and Journalists to mark the 2022 World Peace Day through creative initiatives in Nigeria.

Ahead of the 21st September 2022 event, the Network under Interfaith Mediation Center Kaduna and Mercy Corp said it’s doing this through Social media and other broadcast stations on the need to boost the ‘Christian and Muslims relationship’ across the 19 Northern States of Nigeria.

The media organisation also has plans to take Peace campaigns to schools, communities, markets and football view centres.

It said; “We are going to use Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to educate youths on the role of promoting peaceful co-existence and religious tolerance among different faith base organisations.”

A statement signed by the Team-leader of the network Ibrahima Yakubu said, “In commemoration of the day, we will use the Radio, Television, Newspapers and Social Media to mobilise Christians and Muslims across the 36 States to enlighten different faith base organisations on the need to sustain peace, love, unity and forgiveness.”

Yakubu said; “the essence is to promote harmony among the people regardless of their faith, tribe, culture, ethnicity, race, colour, height, region or continent.”

The team leader urged the media organisations to promote peace activities throughout the day

He also called on other non-governmental organisations in peace-building to equally take the campaigns to rural areas.

Media coverage

Ibrahima emphasised the need for more media coverage and activities of peace promoters in the community.

He urged Peace Commission and other relevant government organisations to keep introducing initiatives that would promote peace and unity among the adherence of different faith base organisations in the country.

He expressed delight over the commitment of Mercy Corp and Interfaith Mediation Centre for the monthly Peace Journalism training for over two and a half years.

He added that the training has transformed many Journalists in Nigeria.
