Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has emphasised that training personnel is a crucial investment needed to achieve high success in all its operations.
General Lagbaja stated this at the inauguration ceremony and inaugural lecture of the Army War College Course 8/2024, at the Army War College WU Bassey Barracks, Abuja, Nigeria.
The Army Chief challenged the participants to be courageous and ingenious in bringing viable military options to the table that would be daring, logical and reasonable. He further urged the directing staff to guide participants to be forthcoming with innovative military options and strategies that can form part of the solutions to national security.
“A nation that places a high premium on funding troops’ training will spend less on prosecuting its wars. The prime place of training for the Nigerian Army in living up to its purpose as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution is aptly captured in my command philosophy: “To transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.
“To this end, I intend to prioritise continuous training of Nigerian Army personnel as a way of producing competent officers and men who can effectively confront Nigeria’s multifaceted security challenges of the current era,“ stated COAS.
An inaugural lecture titled “Military Leadership in Volatile and Complex Operating Environment” was delivered by the former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (Rtd).
Earlier, the Commandant Army War College Nigeria, Major General Ishaya Maina, reminded the participants that the dynamics of the contemporary operating environment place a premium on operational-level leaders with the requisite expertise in military decision-making and strategic thinking.
“The requirement for highly skilled and motivated operational-level leaders capable of performing optimally in the joint environment is more pressing now than ever before; hence, the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy centres on training and transformation in a joint environment.“
While giving the course highlights, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies at AWCN, Brigadier General Aminu Umar, said, “The course assembled on February 2 and commenced on February 5. Course 8 has a total of 77 participants, composed of 66 NA officers, 2 NN officers, and 2 NAF officers.
“There are also 7 allied officers from friendly countries. The allied officers on this course comprise 2 participants from Republic Cameroun and one participant each from the Republics of Cote d’Ivoire, the Congo, Togo, Liberia and the Kingdom of Eswatini.“
