The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-backed political party, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi announced his defection on Wednesday, December 31, in Enugu, stating that the move was driven by a renewed commitment to transforming and rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi said. He also emphasised the coalition’s determination to safeguard democracy, adding, “We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027.”
The former Anambra State governor called on opposition leaders across the country to unite as one family under the leadership of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, to chart a new course for the nation.
Several prominent political figures attended the event, including Senator David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former governors from the South-East; and other party leaders.
Also present were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Enyinnya Abaribe, and Sam Egwu; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; as well as several serving and former members of the National Assembly.
The defection is seen as a significant development in the build-up to the 2027 elections, as opposition parties intensify efforts to form a united front.
