The Nigerian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to national security, protecting lives and property across the country, following the tragic attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, Plateau State, describing the incident as a criminal act that is being decisively addressed.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated at a press conference on the security situation in Plateau State, North-Central Nigeria, that the attack was criminal in nature and assured Nigerians that the situation in Jos is under control. He urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.

“The Federal Government will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, operational readiness, and inter-agency coordination to stay ahead of emerging threats and ensure lasting peace nationwide,” he said.

Idris further emphasised that Nigeria will not yield to criminal elements or acts of violence as it works to restore lasting peace in Plateau.

“Nigeria will not bow to criminal elements. We will protect our people, and we will prevail. Nigerians must not allow criminals to divide communities. Our unity remains strong, and we must all work together to sustain peace and stability across the country,” he stressed.

According to the Information Minister, security agencies responded swiftly, deploying troops under Operation Enduring Peace to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

“The military and other security agencies cordoned off the affected area, secured key access routes, and launched targeted operations to track down the perpetrators. These swift actions ensured that the situation was quickly contained,” he said.

Idris noted that this response is part of a broader and sustained security framework in Plateau State and the wider North-Central region, involving intelligence-led operations, reinforced surveillance, and joint patrols. He reaffirmed the government’s determination to dismantle criminal and insurgent networks, revealing that President Tinubu convened a high-level security meeting with top intelligence chiefs to review the situation and take decisive steps towards a lasting solution.

“These efforts reflect a comprehensive and evolving approach to safeguarding lives and property across the country. They underscore the seriousness with which the Federal Government is treating this matter,” Idris added.

Expressing deep concern over the incident, Idris extended condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Plateau State.

“The Federal Government expresses deep concern over this tragic attack and extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the Government of Plateau State,” the Minister said, describing the attack as deeply regrettable and urging Nigerians to view it within the context of localised security challenges.

“This does not represent a breakdown of national security, but rather a criminal act within a conflict-prone area—one that is being actively addressed,” he explained.

The Minister called on Nigerians to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, warning against the spread of unverified information. He assured citizens that those responsible would be brought to justice.

“There will be no safe haven for criminal elements anywhere in Nigeria. We are confident that those behind this attack will be held accountable. Nigeria’s unity remains strong, and we must not allow criminal elements to divide our communities,” he added.

The Plateau State Government has since taken complementary measures, including imposing a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to stabilise the situation and support ongoing security operations.
