Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang has formally defected from the Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Ruling All Progressives Congress APC declaring that his decision was borne out of prayer, deep refflection, and a desire to unite Plateau State beyond partisan divisions.
The governor made the declaration during a well-attended event in Jos, which was witnessed by APC party leaders, members of the National Assembly, state and local government officials, and other political stakeholders.
Governor Mutfwang described his defection as a divinely guided step aimed at healing long-standing political divisions in the state. Reflecting on Plateau’s political history under past administrations, he noted that polarisation had deepened over the years, cutting across successive governments.
“When I took over, the divisions also got worse, But I prayed silently that God would bring us together. Today, I’m beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.I have decided to accept the membership of the APC, “I don’t care what side we belong to, but as far as Plateau is concerned, if indeed you love Plateau, you are my brother, ” Governor Mutfwang declared”
Commitment to President Tinubu and 2027 Elections
Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed his loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that he had committed to supporting the president’s leadership and re-election as far back as June 3, 2023.
“I am committed to his presidency and committed to his re-election. “I believe in his determination to fix the challenges of Nigeria.” he said.
Governor Mutfwang explained that joining the APC would allow him to advocate more effectively for Plateau State at the national level, ensuring the state has a seat at the discussion table on matters of national development.
The governor expressed optimism about the 2027 general elections, projecting peace and unity while pledging to deliver “one million more votes” for President Tinubu from Plateau State.
Addressing concerns from skeptics and former party colleagues, Governor Mutfwang stressed that his defection was not an act of hostility.
“Those who are left behind in the PDP are not my enemies. They are my friends and my brothers. I urged them to be patient and trust in the unfolding political process. This ship we are entering today has enough room for everyone.
“We will respect our elders, cherish our women, encourage our young people, and carry along all disadvantaged groups.” he said
“Earlier the Apc Chairman in the State Hon. Rufus Bature formally received the governor into the party describing the occasion as historic
“Today’s event will be recalled in the annals of Plateau’s history,”, quoting the biblical book of Ecclesiastes: “For everything there is a time, and the time is now. Having fulfilled all the requirements of the party constitution, we accord to you all the privileges enshrined in the APC Constitution and accept you as a full member of the APC with card number, 311110100001” he declared.
The defection of Governor Mutfwang marks a significant shift in Plateau State’s political landscape, with analysts viewing it as a major boost for the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
