Poland has unveiled plans to deploy a fleet of military observation satellites slated for launch in 2025, in a significant stride towards bolstering its national security capabilities.

The announcement was made by Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk during a press briefing.

“Next year, as the Ministry of Defence and the Polish Army, we want to put our first Polish satellites into orbit,” Tomczyk stated.

The forthcoming satellite system aims to incorporate cutting-edge radar and optical technology, facilitating uninterrupted Earth observation regardless of atmospheric conditions. Tomczyk emphasized the incorporation of both foreign and domestic technologies in the project.

The move to develop a space force was also announced during the briefing. Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz underscored the imperative of advancing Poland’s military infrastructure, citing insights gleaned from Ukraine’s experiences following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

“At this critical juncture, we are undertaking strategic initiatives such as the establishment of a space force alongside other specialized units, drawing inspiration from the lessons learned in Ukraine,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.

The Ministry of Defence had previously forged a pivotal agreement with aerospace giant Airbus in December 2022 for the procurement of two reconnaissance satellites. The satellites are slated for launch by 2027, constituting a significant milestone in Poland’s journey towards enhancing its national security apparatus.
