Police Investigate Human Right Violation Allegations Against Ex-Falcon Player

The Anambra State Police Command is currently investigating allegations of assault and human rights violations involving Maureen Madu, a former striker for the Super Falcons and operator of a local football academy.
This follows unsettling reports of an incident on October 19, 2024, when officers from the Anti-Cult Unit, Zone 13, Ukpo, reportedly invaded Madu’s academy in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, brutalized players, and detained her without a proper investigation.
In an official statement released and signed by Ikenga Tochukwu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer on Wednesday, acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations and emphasized the police’s commitment to transparency and accountability under the leadership of CP Nnaghe Obono Itam. “The State Police Command invited Maureen Madu and members of her team to clarify the facts surrounding the incident,” Tochukwu stated. An investigation revealed that the incident occurred months ago, and efforts had previously been made to resolve the conflict amicably.
According to Madu, the incident stemmed from a dispute involving Mr. Uchenna Onyekwunife, who allegedly registered his daughter for summer coaching at her academy in June but failed to maintain contact or provide adequate support during her four-month stay. When Madu refused to release the girl to an unknown cab driver sent by Onyekwunife, the latter filed a petition claiming “armed gangsterism, cultism, attempted murder, child trafficking, and threats to life.”
Madu contended that the police acted hastily without investigating the allegations, leading a team to her academy that not only assaulted her and her team but also destroyed personal property, including mobile phones. She was reportedly handcuffed and taken into custody without an opportunity to explain her side of the story.
Madu has called upon the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to thoroughly investigate the actions of the officers involved, specifically targeting Ayuba Ahmadu, the Officer in Charge of the Anti-Cult Unit, and SP Sunday Aleke for alleged abuse of power and unprofessional conduct.
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed solidarity with Madu, demanding a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the matter. They assert that law enforcement should not misuse their authority against celebrated sports icons, particularly those who have dedicated their lives to uplifting young athletes.
As the investigation unfolds, the Anambra State Police Command has urged the public to remain calm and assured that they are committed to rebuilding trust with the community. “All parties involved can expect a fair review of the allegations,” Tochukwu stated.
