Police have commenced immediate and intensive investigations into the murder of the traditional ruler, Olukoro of Koro, in the Ekiti local government area of Kwara State, north-central Nigeria, Oba Peter Segun Aremu-Cole and the abduction of three others, including his wife.
The police confirmed that the attack on the traditional ruler and his family took place on Thursday night, February 1 by unknown gunmen.
Meanwhile, the state governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, has condemned the killing of the traditional ruler and the abduction of his wife, which he said was reckless, shocking and abominable.
The governor said, “We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity. My profound condolences go out to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always,” the governor said.
He charged the security agencies not to spare any resources to track down the perpetrators, free the spouse and others taken away, and bring them to book.
Security measures in the Koro community have been intensified, tactical teams are being mobilised to beef up security to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as they worked tirelessly to arrest and charge the culprits in court.
He added that the State Police Force remained resolute in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
The late monarch was in his mid-sixties.
