Police To Begin Strict Enforcement of Third-Party Motor Insurance Compliance
By: Elizabeth Christopher
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced that starting February 1, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force will intensify efforts to enforce compliance with third-party motor insurance laws.
Currently, only about 30% of vehicles in Nigeria are insured, prompting a nationwide crackdown aimed at ensuring the safety of lives and property on the roads.
This move follows discussions with the Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), on the critical role of insurance in road safety and the legal consequences of non-compliance.
During a visit by the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, to the Force Headquarters, the IGP emphasized the importance of third-party motor insurance and highlighted the legal penalties for driving without it.
Recognizing the critical importance of insurance in protecting lives and property, the IGP announced that the full enforcement of third-party motor insurance will commence on February 1, 2025.
Commissioner Omosehin, during the meeting, reiterated the need for collaboration between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force to ensure compliance with compulsory insurance policies.
He pointed out the need for a mass awareness campaign and education of police officers to effectively enforce these regulations.
