The National Population Commission in Nigeria says it has registered and offered birth certificates to over 10m Children across the country.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Nasir Kwara made the statement to journalists after Nigeria’s First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, presented a birth certificate to the baby of the year in Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital
The Chairman of the Commission who was represented by the Federal Commissioner from Katsina State, Mr Bala Banya said that the “Commission would leave no stone unturned until every child born in Nigeria was registered and offered a birth certificate.”
He said; “with the digitization of the registration system and collaboration with the Primary Health Care Agency, children wherever they are born would be registered.”
The Chairman said the registration is free and called on all parents and guardians to register their Children.
Also speaking, the Director General of the Commission, Dr. Telson Ojegun stressed that, “the commission has concluded plans to establish over four thousand registration centers throughout the country to bring registration centers closer to the people.”
Dr. Ojegun also noted that National Population Commission “is taken advantage of available technology to ensure every child registered, have an identity that cannot be duplicated anywhere.”
The Director General appreciated the First Lady who was represented by the wife of Nigeria’s Vice President, Mrs. Nana Shetima for presenting the certificate to the baby of the year.
The National Population Commission also urged Nigerians to register deaths with the commission to enable it maintain a clean register for proper documentation and national planing.
