Premier League: Liverpool Beats Burnley, Regains Top Spot
Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League after a valuable 3-1 win against Burnley, courtesy of goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, at the Anfield in Liverpool, England.
The hosts featured Nunez in front. with Jota and Diaz supporting on the flanks. For Burnley, Zeki Amdouni and David Datro Fofana started in a two-man attack as the visitors looked for an upset.
Manchester City had climbed above Liverpool earlier on Saturday after claiming a 2-0 victory against Everton, however Jurgen Klopp’s men were determined to stay in the fight as Jota nodded Liverpool into the lead.
Just before the halftime break, Burnley equalised when Dara O’Shea powered in a header to the shock of the fans at Anfield.
However, Luis Diaz restored Liverpool’s lead in the 52nd minute of the second half. The goal seemed to upset Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, who thought the goal should have been ruled out by the VAR for a foul on Aaron Ramsey in the build-up.
As Burnley looked for a way back into the match, striker Datro Fofona then missed two big chances to bring the visitors level.
Forward before Nunez then made Burnley pay for their costly misses as he steered a late header into the left corner to secure all three (3) points for Liverpool.
The result means Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester City on the Premier League table, with the champions having played a game less than Liverpool.
Liverpool travel to Brentford for Premier League action on February 17th, while Burnley hosts Arsenal next.
