Presidency commiserates with VON, IPI, NUJ on demise of Veteran Journalist Salami

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Management and Staff of Voice of Nigeria (VON) following the demise of Assistant Director, Digital Media Department, Hajiya Rafat Onyeche Salami

In a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, he also commiserated with members of the International Press Institute, Nigeria (IPI) where the late Salami was recently elected as Treasurer, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

The President called on colleagues, friends, and family of the deceased prolific writer, Mrs Salami to honour her by continuing the impactful work she championed as they bid farewell to the multilingual and multitalented journalist.

President Tinubu acknowledged Mrs Salami’s unwavering commitment to her profession and the nation.

“Her loss has been deeply felt across the journalistic community and beyond.”

The Nigerian Leader lauded the IPI Nigeria official’s contributions to crucial developmental issues, even as he commended her advocacy for women and children’s rights.

He identified her efforts as a testament to her strong voice and compassionate spirit.

“In her career as a reporter, broadcaster, and producer, Hajiya Salami tried to keep the public informed on crucial developmental issues.”

Hajiya Salami also served as the Secretary of the NUJ, Abuja Council, she dedicated her talents and passion to advancing journalism in Nigeria.

Rafatu Salami, A Seasoned Broadcast Journalist

Mrs Rafatu Salami, a seasoned broadcast journalist, and a trail blazer , passed away on Thursday at about 11 pm.

Onyecher Salami, Assistant Director of Digital Media at Voice of Nigeria (VON), was Known for her professionalism and commanding presence, she left an indelible mark in the field of journalism throughout her illustrious career.

Beyond her newsroom contributions, Salami was an active unionist and advocate for press freedom.

She served as Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Abuja Council and played a pivotal role in hosting the International Press Institute Congress in 2018.

The late Salami was recently re-elected as the Treasurer of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria Leadership and celebrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
