President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police, with immediate effect.
The move comes in view of current security challenges facing the country and in accordance with existing laws and legal provisions.

The President, in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, expressed confidence that AIG Disu’s experience, operational expertise and proven leadership capacity would provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.
Onanuga also disclosed that, in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act, President Tinubu would shortly convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider AIG Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
He also accepted the resignation of the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, following the submission of a letter which cited personal family reasons for the resignation.
The President expressed deep appreciation for Mr. Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, commending his professionalism, dedication, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Mr. Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
