President Tinubu mourns former CAF President, the late Hayatou

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consoled the family of the late Issa Hayatou, former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), who passed away at 77 on Thursday, August 8, 2024

Describing the passing of the legendary football administrator as a huge loss, President Tinubu in a statement signed by his Spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, underlined Mr Hayatou’s contributions to the development of sport in Africa and beyond.

President Tinubu further commiserated with the Cameroonian Football Federation, the people of Cameroon, and the African football community

The Nigerian Leader prays for the repose of the soul of the departed and strength to his family at this difficult time.

Background

The one-time acting President of FIFA, Issa Hayatou, was born in Garoua, in what was then French Cameroon on August9, 1946 and died 8 August 2024.

He was a Cameroonian sports executive, athlete

Following the retirement of Ethiopia’s Ydnekatchew Tessema from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presidency in August 1987, the late Hayatou was elected as the fifth president and served between 1988 and 2017.

He lost his seventh re-election campaign to Ahmad Ahmad in March 2017.

On 24 May 2017, he was appointed President of the National Football Academy by the President of Cameroon, Paul Biya.

Hayatou was married with four children.
