President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to transform the mining sector into a cornerstone of the country’s economic future.
This was highlighted during the opening address of the 9th edition of Nigeria Mining Week, held in Abuja with the theme, ‘From Inside-Out: Building the Mining Sector to Be the Cornerstone of Nigeria’s Economy.’
Represented by the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, President Tinubu emphasised that this year’s theme reflects the essence of the country’s journey towards sustainable economic growth.
“We gather not just to convene, but to chart a transformative path for Nigeria’s mining industry- an industry brimming with potential to fuel our economy and secure a future of shared prosperity,” he stated.
The President credited the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dela Alake, for the renewed vigor in Nigeria’s mining agenda.
“Under his leadership, Nigeria is addressing sectoral challenges with a clear vision to position its mining industry as a global leader in innovation, resilience, and sustainability.”
President Tinubu also highlighted key reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda, including updates to the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.
“This legislative reform aims to bring transparency, charity, and international competitiveness to our mining laws, making Nigeria an attractive destination for global investors,” the President noted.
The government’s focus on infrastructure development was another key pillar of Tinubu’s address. Strategic investments in transportation, energy, and communication infrastructure are being made to boost the mining sector’s capacity to meet global market demands.
“Public-private partnerships are also central to these plans, ensuring that Nigeria’s mining sector thrives with enhanced connectivity and operational efficiency.”
“Human capital is the heart of any thriving industry,” he said, adding that Nigeria is investing in comprehensive training programs, vocational institutes, and research facilities to equip its workforce with the skills needed to drive innovation and sustainable growth.
Environmental sustainability, according to President Tinubu, remains a priority, with strict regulations in place to protect Nigeria’s natural resources.
“The government is also working closely with local communities to ensure the benefits of mining are shared equitably, with a focus on socio-economic development and ecosystem rehabilitation.”
In a global context, the President highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to unlock new markets and attract international expertise.
“Through diplomatic engagements and global partnerships, Nigeria is not only showcasing its mineral wealth but also contributing to a global mining industry that champions ethical practices and sustainability.”
The President concluded by emphasising the importance of transparency, governance, and ethical leadership in the mining sector.
He urged all stakeholders to harness the momentum of the current reforms to achieve the shared vision of a prosperous and resilient mining industry.
“I declare open today the Nigeria Mining Week 2024,” President Tinubu said, signaling a renewed commitment to the growth and development of the mining sector as a pillar of Nigeria’s economic future.
The event also saw announcements of new initiatives for the mining sector, continuing the tradition of unveiling innovative projects aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global mining arena.
