Wife of Nigeria’s President, Mrs Buhari says she will continue to focus on the provision of medical assistance to indigent persons in the society.

Speaking at the public presentation of her book titled “matching words with action,” Mrs Buhari said 18,000 women and children have so far benefitted from her health assistance programme.

Mrs Buhari said the health programme being implemented under her pet project, “Future Assured,” provided free Medicare to Nigerians that had no opportunity to treat themselves of various ailments.

“Under the Future Assured programme, I embarked on a health screening exercise to check on common diseases such as diabetes and cancer for the women, as well as de-warming of children in order to promote their nutrition, across the si geo-political zones of the country, in total, over eighteen thousand of them have benefitted free of charge,” she said.

Continuous Effort

She said in line with her support to the current administration, the free health programme would continue, to afford many more the opportunity to benefit from her benevolence.

“Most of our activities in the past one year focused on issues in the area of health and the wellbeing of women and children as well as the less privileged members of the society. The aim is to make health services accessible and affordable to all citizens. The journey has just begun and we will continue to do our best at different levels to compliment the efforts of this administration,” the wife of the President pledged.

Speaking to Voice of Nigeria, Minister of health Professor Isaac Adewale said the wife of the President’s programme has brought succour to a lot of Nigerians, boosting the health sector in the process.

“We can use her power of mobilization to help attract women and children in particular to the health facilities. We can equally use that to even reduce the number of women and children who die during pregnancy and delivery and also make sure that children survive beyond age five. This is one programme we want to utilize in promoting health in Nigeria,” he said.

He urged those who shy away from modern medicine to embrace it to improve their health status.

Wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Asama’u Yari, who spoke on behalf of her colleagues, thanked Mrs Buhari for touching the lives of women and children, especially rural dwellers.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr John Odigie Oyegun commended the wife of the President for her laudable programmes, which he said were in line with the manifestoes of the APC.

The programme was graced by Ministers, Wives of State Governors, as well as Diplomats and their Spouses.

The 153 page book chronicles heart touching speeches and remarks made by Mrs Buhari during campaigns and since her husband assumed office in the last one year.
