The 2025 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council Press Week, commenced on Friday with a congregational prayer at NASFAT Mosque, Utako, Abuja.

In his sermon, the Acting Zonal Missionary Imam of NASFAT FCT, Imam Marouf Farouji, urged the NUJ leadership to remain unwavering in their service to humanity and commitment to journalistic integrity.
“Let us begin by thanking Almighty Allah for the gift of life, for making us human, and for granting us faith,” he said. “The Holy Qur’an addresses every aspect of life, including journalism, communication, and information. When people lack proper information, corruption thrives. But informed citizens make better, more ethical choices.”
Imam Farouji commended journalists across all media—print, audio, visual, and digital—for their essential role in shaping public opinion and fostering enlightenment.
“Journalism is a vital force in national development and societal reformation. Whether Muslim or Christian, the information disseminated by journalists helps citizens fulfil both civic and spiritual obligations. May Allah continue to strengthen them in this noble path,” he concluded.
Representing the NUJ FCT Council at the event, Vice Chairman Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo said starting the Press Week with prayer reflects Nigeria’s deeply rooted religious identity.
“Nigeria is a religious nation, and journalists are no different. As we launch this year’s Press Week, beginning with an Islamic prayer here at NASFAT Mosque aligns with our values,” he said.

Ndambabo also noted that a Christian Thanksgiving service is scheduled for Sunday, reflecting the union’s commitment to unity, inclusivity, and divine direction.
“As we dedicate this week to God, we are equally focused on advocating for improved welfare for journalists in the FCT—especially in areas of affordable housing and enhanced protection,” he added.
Other highlights of the week include a public lecture and the re-establishment of press clubs in secondary schools across the territory—an effort aligned with the NUJ’s vision to nurture responsible journalism from a young age.
He concluded with a strong message: “We urge journalists to maintain the highest ethical standards and lead the charge against fake news. The battle against misinformation starts with us.”

The solemn gathering drew media professionals from Abuja and neighbouring states, setting a reflective and purposeful tone for the week-long activities.
