Prison Inmates: Minister Orders Investigation Into Alleged Poor Feeding

The Minister of Interior has initiated an inquiry into the reported inadequate nourishment of detainees. The findings will be made available to the general public.

During the monthly briefing of the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee, held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, the Spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abubakar Umar addressed reports of alleged poor feeding of inmates.

He mentioned that the Minister of Interior has ordered an investigation into this matter, with the outcome set to be disclosed to the public.

Additionally, Umar mentioned that the feeding allowance of inmates has been increased to 50% starting from August 2024.

Furthermore, he highlighted the success of the custodial service’s rehabilitation program, noting that it has produced exceptional inmates who have earned degrees and higher qualifications.

In a related development, the Police Spokesman, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the arrest of nine suspects involved in a plot to destabilize the government.

Notably, the coordinated efforts of various security agencies led to the apprehension of these individuals. Among them are Andrew Whynne, a British national, and Lucky Ehis Obiyan, both of whom were sought for their alleged involvement in terrorism financing.

Adejobi reported that the nationwide ‘End Bad Governance in Nigeria’ protest, observed from August 1st to 10th, resulted in the arrest of 873 individuals across several states.

The arrests were made in connection with various criminal activities, including armed robbery, arson, and vandalism, spanning states such as Kano, Jigawa, FCT, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto, Yobe, Borno, Edo, and Gombe.
