The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Abuja Chapter, has urged Muslims to prioritise healthy living, fulfil their Zakat obligations and strengthen charitable activities as part of the spiritual essence of Ramadan.

The call was made during the association’s 19th Annual Ramadan Lecture and Iftar held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers Main Auditorium in the Central Area of Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Delivering the lecture titled “Ramadan: Protecting Your Health and Purifying Your Wealth,” the Imam of the National Hospital Mosque, Dr. Saheed Alimi, said the fasting period offers Muslims an opportunity to improve both their spiritual devotion and physical wellbeing.

Dr. Alimi explained that fasting, when properly observed, allows the digestive system to rest and promotes moderation in eating habits.

He cautioned Muslims against excessive consumption during sahur and iftar, noting that discipline and restraint are essential to achieving the spiritual benefits of the holy month.

According to the Imam, Ramadan also provides a period for believers to reassess their lifestyles and adopt healthier habits rooted in Islamic teachings.

He further stressed the importance of Zakat, describing it as a compulsory pillar of Islam meant to purify wealth and support vulnerable members of society.

The cleric urged eligible Muslims to properly assess their financial status and ensure they fulfil the obligation once they meet the required threshold, known as nisab.

Dr. Alimi also referenced the stance of the first Caliph, Abu Bakr, in upholding Zakat compliance, noting that faith and social responsibility are closely linked in Islamic practice.

He added that the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), was known to be most generous during Ramadan, encouraging Muslims to intensify acts of charity during the period.

In his remarks, Chairman of the UNIFEMGA Abuja Chapter, Sulaiman Muhammad, described Ramadan as a time for reflection, compassion and service to humanity.

He said the annual lecture series was aimed at strengthening spiritual understanding among members while promoting initiatives that support community development.

Muhammad particularly encouraged Muslims to support programmes that provide food and assistance to the needy during the fasting period.

Also speaking, Ibrahim Kunle Olarewaju reminded participants that the true benefits of fasting are reflected in improved character, discipline and accountability to God.

In her contribution, Ajoke Adepoju of the FCT High Court urged Muslims to uphold justice, integrity and fairness in their personal and professional dealings.

The highlight of the programme was a fundraising drive for a ₦3 billion endowment fund aimed at constructing an ultra-modern Islamic Centre for the association in Abuja.

The event concluded with a communal iftar and prayers for peace and progress in Nigeria.
