Renowned Nigerian Islamic scholar, Sheik AbdurRahman Ahmad, has urged the media to spearhead a societal rebirth through their reportage.

Sheik Ahmed, who is the Chief Missioner of Ansarudeen Muslim Society, articulated his message during his keynote address at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Council Maiden Ramadan lecture, held at Lagos Television (LTV) Combo Hall in Agidingbi, Ikeja.

In his discourse, Sheik Ahmed denounced the LGBTQ ideology, categorising same-sex unions as a grievous affront to humanity. He implored Muslim adherents and the media alike to staunchly oppose the phenomenon, urging them to actively engage in campaigns aimed at thwarting the promotion of same-sex marriage within society.

He emphasised that core principles of Islamic law encompass the preservation of lives, intellect, and wealth.

Sheikh Ahmed highlighted the Western promotion of gender change and same-sex unions as contrary to Islamic values, emphasizing the imperative of guiding people towards righteousness to avert damnation.

He commended the NUJ for organising the event and prayed for its continuity, advocating for people-centric policies for governmental adoption.

The chairman of the event, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, characterised economic challenges as global phenomena necessitating mutual support for survival.

Drawing from his experience as the former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, he advocated for a culture of sharing food items, especially amidst the current economic strain in the country.

Professor Fagbohun spoke against disparaging the nation and its leaders, emphasizing the futility of such actions. Instead, he urged everyone to pray for the nation and its leaders, invoking divine strength to guide the country towards its desired objectives.

Financial prudence

During the event, Dr. Aminant Ige-Ariyibi, a mathematics lecturer at Lagos State University, addressed the topic of marital discord exacerbated by financial hardships, advocating for financial prudence in household management.

Dr. Ige-Ariyibi emphasized the importance of women cultivating skills in home management to alleviate the challenges of the times. She highlighted the inevitability of financial crises but suggested mitigating strategies such as reducing unnecessary spending and fostering kindness and support between spouses, while emphasizing the significance of prayer for sustainability.

Historic event

Meanwhile, Mr. Adeleye Ajayi, Chairman of NUJ Lagos Council, hailed the Ramadan Lecture themed “Islam and Sanctity of Life” as a historic event for the Union, symbolizing solidarity with its Muslim members and associates during the ongoing Ramadan fasting period.

He urged fasting Muslims to utilize the holy month to pray for Nigeria to overcome present challenges and reclaim its position as the giant of Africa. Mr. Ajayi implored all Nigerians, regardless of creed, tribe, or political affiliation, to foster unity for a peaceful and prosperous nation.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to dignitaries and a Quran recitation competition among secondary schools, organized through collaboration between the Union and the Lagos State Area Unit of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN Lagos).

With over one thousand participants in attendance, the event underscored its significance in promoting communal solidarity and fostering spiritual reflection.
