Mrs Adebola Kolawole, the Chairman of NRC, Lagos State Branch, speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, described the occasion as one of “love, hope, and care.”

Kolawole said the home, which started in July 1964, played a significant role during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) by offering refuge to children separated or abandoned by their mothers.

“From its modest beginning with a 35-bed capacity, the home now has a 50-bed capacity, offering a safe haven for children from various circumstances, including those as young as two days old, abandoned in gutters or refuse dumps.”

Kolawole emphasised that the anniversary was a time to reflect on the institution’s past 60 years, during which countless lives had been touched.

She expressed gratitude for the tireless efforts of the founding members, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who have made the home a sanctuary for children.

“Each child’s story is a chapter in the larger narrative of hope and resilience.

“Together, we have built a place where children not only find shelter but also receive love, care, and the opportunity to dream and aspire,” she said.

The Chairman also acknowledged the courage of the mothers who had to abandon their babies in search of safety during difficult times.

She thanked the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for recognising the Red Cross’ efforts in family tracing and reunification.

Kolawole expressed appreciation for the contributions of the state government and the Juvenile Welfare Centre of the Nigerian Police Force to the welfare of the children.

She added that the Red Cross planned to further enhance the facilities and programmes of the babies’ home to ensure that the children received the care and support they needed to thrive.

She urged individuals, governments, and institutions to continue supporting and partnering with the Red Cross in its mission.
