The President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mr Oluyemisi Adeaga, has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to explore local funding sources for humanitarian aid. Adeaga made this statement in Abuja during the official induction of Olori Temitope Enitan-Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, as a brand ambassador for the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

He explained that the sudden discontinuation of funding for certain projects by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had presented both a challenge and a wake-up call for the country.

“The recent withdrawal of USAID funding is a significant blow to humanitarian efforts, further limiting resources for those in dire need. Yet, in spite of these daunting obstacles, we do not despair. The Society, a sure sign of hope, remains steadfast, committed to becoming a dynamic voluntary aid organisation that leads in satisfying humanitarian needs and protecting the dignity of the most vulnerable communities to build resilience,” Adeaga stated.

According to him, local non-profits must take proactive steps to sustain critical humanitarian efforts without relying solely on foreign assistance.

As a brand ambassador, Adeaga said Olori Temitope would be expected to use her platform to advocate for increased local participation in humanitarian efforts.

“She will work closely with the society to raise awareness, mobilise resources, and encourage more individuals and organisations to support life-saving initiatives. Her appointment signals a strategic effort by the society to harness influential voices to drive meaningful change in the humanitarian sector,” he added.

In her acceptance speech, Enitan-Ogunwusi said that joining the society as a brand ambassador was both an honour and a call to action.

“I intend to use my voice, my platform, and my network to amplify the urgent need for local support in humanitarian efforts. This is not just about giving; it is about building a culture of compassion and responsibility. By working closely with the Red Cross, I hope to mobilise more resources, inspire meaningful collaborations, and ensure that help reaches those who need it most. True change begins when we come together to uplift our communities,” she said.

Enitan-Ogunwusi also expressed concern that many people were struggling to survive.

“How can I turn away? Giving back is not just about charity; it is about restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity to those who need it most. This is why I dedicate myself to humanitarian work, because true fulfilment comes from uplifting others.”
