A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Search for Common Ground will be training Nigerian Journalists on religious freedom reportage.
The Project Manager of the Organization, Daniel Ogabiela made this known in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital at the end of a 3- day workshop for Journalists aimed at developing the curriculum for the training.
Mr Ogabiela stated that the NGO would work with the guides given to them by the participants at the workshop and build on it to produce a curriculum that will be used in the training.
“We are going to build it and produce a curriculum that we are going to share back with all the media houses. But much more than that, we are going to use it in training journalists.“
He revealed that the NGO had already mapped out media houses in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria where their Journalists would undergo the training programme.
A participant from Voice of Nigeria, Yahaya Ndambabo said that the media remains a critical stakeholder in the sustenance of peace, and so requires sound knowledge on reporting issues of religion and belief
Another participant from Kiss FM, Peculiar Ataneh said the experience was an inspiration for her as she gets to understand more the need for freedom for religion and beliefs and also the need to communicate effectively in relation to it
A participant from Blueprint Newspaper, Adeola Akinbobola commended the Organization for the initiative and urged other NGOs to emulate the exercise so as to improve the society.
