Religious Leader Appeal To President Tinubu To Rethink Rivers Emergency Rule
By Gloria Essien, Abuja
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to rethink his declaration of state of emergency rule in Rivers State and call back the elected governor to continue his duty.
He was also urged to question the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesome Wike and the suspended twenty seven members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to follow through with what the Supreme Court ruled.
The President, International Council of Archbishops and Bishops for Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches, President, Signatures International Foundation and presiding Archbishop of Rapha Faith International University College & Ministerial Network, Presiding Archbishop, Healing World International Christian Center and President International Advocate for Male Gender, Archbishop Benny Danson, made the appeal.
Speaking at a Press Conference in Abuja Archbishop Danson decried the suspension as really unconstitutional.
He called on the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, traditional rulers, members of the judiciary, and all well-meaning Nigerians to come into this matter, not in violence, but rather speak out and get the error corrected.
According to the Archbishop, the best decision the President should have taken would have been to call the FCT minister to order and call the 27 legislative members of the House of Assembly to order and call the governor to order.
“So if there was anybody to suspend, I think it should have been both the FCT minister and the governor. The state is going through this because His Excellency Wike, who is a former governor, is interfering with the governorship of the present governor. Which is unconstitutional too,” he said.
Speaking further Archbishop Danson, lamented the suspension of the Deputy Governor saying she has done nothing than being silent, waiting to hear, and obey the last order.
“You can’t suspend the governor and suspend his deputy, who handles the affairs of the state. And we are in a democracy and you brought a retired military man. That is returning us back to the military regime, which is unconstitutional. Sir, with all due respect, rethink your decision the broadcast you made, because it may cause more chaos,” he added.
